These images are of the National Football Museum, situated next to Preston North End’s stadium, Deepdale. The Museum has been a huge talking point of recent in Preston, as there has been a proposed move for it to be split into two parts, one staying at Deepdale whilst the other half re-locates to ‘Urbis’ in Manchester.

This map was created on Google Maps and shows the stories that I selected from the Lancashire Evening Post on November 17th, 2009.
Maps like this can intrigue readers from that area, and perhaps influence them to find out more about that story. These maps can be used in a number of different ways, and can be a very good way of interacting with the audience. It also can show how stories break in that area, and what stories are actually news-worthy.

Student Journalist Chris Jones gives his view on Liverpool’s early group stage exit, after a poor show in the competition.

Liverpool’s fate was decided when Fiorentina beat Lyon 1-0 last night, to ensure that the reds went crashing out of the competition ealry, despite a win against fellow strugglers Debrecen.

The exit is costing them around £30 million, and is a huge blow to the club. Manager Rafa Benitez has said that the club must qualify for the tournament next season no matter what, and has deeply apologised to the fans.

With Liverpool lying 7th in the Premier league and out of the league cup too, The F.A cup looks to be there only hope of bringing back a trophy to Anfield this season, unless they can manage to up their standards in Europeans second tier of football, the Europa League, and fans could argue that even that looks out of reach.

1963, the last time a Brit brought home a mens single Wimbledon title.

It’s been 73 years since Fred Perry defeated Gottfried von Cramm to win the illustrious trophy. Nine other countries have won the title since then, with USA winning it 27 times.

Australia are also into double figures, having won the trophy a respectable 21 times. Lleyton Hewit being the last to win it in 2003, defeating David Nalbandian of Argetina.

Other nations to win the tournament are New Zealand, France, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Egypt, Netherlands, Croatia, Germany and Czech Slovakia.

Most fans would agree that the home of tennis need a new champion, after what has been years and years of disappointment. Andy Murray is now Britain’s best chance of winning the most prestigious trophy in world tennis. He narrowly missed out last year, after losing to American Andy Roddick in the semi-finals.

Our record is embarrassing, and something needs to be done about it. Hopefully, come 2010, there will be a young scot with his name on the Honor’s Wall, a name reading Andrew Murray.

England have secured their place in South African in style, by beating rivals Croatia 5-1 at Wembley tonight.

It was a simply brilliant performance from the boys in white who hardly gave the Croat’s a sniff of the ball. Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard netted twice before Arsenal’s Eduardo da Silva scored a consolation goal 16 minutes from time, only for Wayne Rooney to finish the match off in the 77th minute. The game was as much built up for the win as it was on getting revenge for Slaven Billic and his side, who cost England their place in last year’s European Championships with that shameful performance at Wembley.

England dominated play throughout, and were particularly offensive down the right hand side, where Lennon and Johnson made it their own. Frank Lampard opened the scoring from the penalty spot when man of the match Aaron Lennon was brought down by Graham Poll’s triple yellow card friend Josip Simunic, Lampard kept composure and calmly netted home.

Gerrard got the second when he met Lennon’s cross with an emphatic header 11 minutes later, to take England into the break 2-0 up.

Lampard headed in the third from a Glen Johnson cross in the 59th minute and Gerrard got his second when he nodded in Rooney’s dropping pass in the 66th minute.

Eduardo, who was persistently jeered by the home fans scrambled in Croatia’s goal in the 74th minute, but Rooney finished off the rout 13 minutes from time after a mistake from Keeper Runje.

It makes England the second European team to qualify for the World Cup, with two games to spare, and eight out of eight wins, and

with Ukraine two points behind Croatia and a game in hand, Billic is now severely under pressure to make it to the 2010 competition.

The victory makes England the second European team to qualify for the World Cup, with two games to spare, and eight out of eight wins.

With nine months to prepare, talks are begging of England’s chances to actually go all the way for the first time since 1966, and with a squad this strong and a manager this consistent, I feel we should be aiming for the semi-finals… minimum!

Flaunting their new kit, an emphatic display at Wembley saw England crush Slovakia 4-0. Emile Heskey turned in Steven Gerrards cross seven minutes in to give the Three Lions an early lead whilst goals from Frank Lampard and a brace from Rooney ensured that Capello’s men are fired up and ready for their qualifier against Ukraine on Wednesday.

It was a performance for England fans to be proud of and maybe now those small percent of fickle fans that don’t care about their national team will start to get behind them. Ahead of Ukraine, Capello has been hit with a striker situation, as Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch and Carlton Cole all picked up injuries, leaving Wayne Rooney as the only recognized striker in the squad. England could be forced to call up replacements, which would most likely be Kevin Davies, Gabby Agbonlahor and Darren Bent. However, word is going round that with Gerrard currently on the top of his game, Capello may play the Liverpool Skipper behind Rooney, who would occupy the ‘Torres’ role.

England Legend David Beckham came on to make his 109th cap, where he received huge applauds from the fans, deservedly. He delivered a perfect cross to set up Rooney’s header in the 70th minute, who had a fantastic game. It was the type of performance Capello wanted to see from ‘the crazy man’ who was all over the pitch and delivered an exhibition of gifts and tricks that makes him such a vital element in the international set-up. With Beckhams brilliant second half performance on the wing, it is sure to of given the manager food for thought as he weighs up his starting line-up for Wednesday.

England could of won 5-0 if it wasn’t for John Terry attempting to steal (which seems to be happening a lot in the Terry household right now) Peter Crouch’s header which looked destined for the back of the net. With a trio of strikers injured, Fans may well be nervy against unbeaten Ukraine and the 14th best national team in the world should not be underestimated by any means. But with five out of five wins in qualifiers, it looks like Capello is starting to get things right and push England to where they deserve to be, in the World Cup Finals.
