Flaunting their new kit, an emphatic display at Wembley saw England crush Slovakia 4-0. Emile Heskey turned in Steven Gerrards cross seven minutes in to give the Three Lions an early lead whilst goals from Frank Lampard and a brace from Rooney ensured that Capello’s men are fired up and ready for their qualifier against Ukraine on Wednesday.
It was a performance for England fans to be proud of and maybe now those small percent of fickle fans that don’t care about their national team will start to get behind them. Ahead of Ukraine, Capello has been hit with a striker situation, as Emile Heskey, Peter Crouch and Carlton Cole all picked up injuries, leaving Wayne Rooney as the only recognized striker in the squad. England could be forced to call up replacements, which would most likely be Kevin Davies, Gabby Agbonlahor and Darren Bent. However, word is going round that with Gerrard currently on the top of his game, Capello may play the Liverpool Skipper behind Rooney, who would occupy the ‘Torres’ role.
England Legend David Beckham came on to make his 109th cap, where he received huge applauds from the fans, deservedly. He delivered a perfect cross to set up Rooney’s header in the 70th minute, who had a fantastic game. It was the type of performance Capello wanted to see from ‘the crazy man’ who was all over the pitch and delivered an exhibition of gifts and tricks that makes him such a vital element in the international set-up. With Beckhams brilliant second half performance on the wing, it is sure to of given the manager food for thought as he weighs up his starting line-up for Wednesday.
England could of won 5-0 if it wasn’t for John Terry attempting to steal (which seems to be happening a lot in the Terry household right now) Peter Crouch’s header which looked destined for the back of the net. With a trio of strikers injured, Fans may well be nervy against unbeaten Ukraine and the 14th best national team in the world should not be underestimated by any means. But with five out of five wins in qualifiers, it looks like Capello is starting to get things right and push England to where they deserve to be, in the World Cup Finals.
