Student Journalist Chris Jones gives his view on Liverpool’s early group stage exit, after a poor show in the competition.

Liverpool’s fate was decided when Fiorentina beat Lyon 1-0 last night, to ensure that the reds went crashing out of the competition ealry, despite a win against fellow strugglers Debrecen.

The exit is costing them around £30 million, and is a huge blow to the club. Manager Rafa Benitez has said that the club must qualify for the tournament next season no matter what, and has deeply apologised to the fans.

With Liverpool lying 7th in the Premier league and out of the league cup too, The F.A cup looks to be there only hope of bringing back a trophy to Anfield this season, unless they can manage to up their standards in Europeans second tier of football, the Europa League, and fans could argue that even that looks out of reach.
